Heavy Lift Rocket Lab

This lab is to introduce students to engineering practices. These practices have been identified to develop students’ “scientific habits of mind” and to grow their skills as problem solvers and critical thinkers. Teams of students are all given the same materials and challenged to develop a design that will carry the heaviest payload.

• Fishing line
• Long balloons
• 3 oz. paper cups
• Drinking straws
• Wooden clothes pins

Each lab kit is equipped for 40 students. If the lab is a group activity (4 students), there are 10 of each item. If the lab is an individual activity, there are 40 of each item. As a reminder, each kit contains the materials needed that are NOT commonly found in the classroom.
